About.
Celebrating the creative work of self-identified Chicana/o/x/e and Latina/o/x/e writers and artists with Midwestern connections. Whether your ties to the Midwest are lifelong, due to relocation, or the result of a chance encounter while passing through the heartland, we want to hear your stories.
We are open to a wide range of intersectional topics that highlight the varied histories, cultures, and experiences of Chicana/o/x/e and Latina/o/x/e writers.
We are especially interested in essays and narratives that:
- Uplift Indigenous and Afro-Latinx voices
- Center Queer and Trans narratives
- Explore biracial/ multiracial realities
- Entertain Latinx futurism (embrace the speculative in Creative Nonfiction)
- Offer intersectional views around disability or working class aesthetics, for example
- Are experimental in form: hybrid, lyric, illustrated, etc.
We do not seek submissions that:
- Focus on the K-16 educational journey
- Perpetuate stereotypes and false narratives of Chicanx/Latinx individuals, especially criminality
- Narratives that exploit trauma and suffering
Con el Corazón en la Mano: Writing the Heartland seeks to be expansive in scope with representation from as many Midwestern states as possible: North and South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana. Your stories, however, do not have to be grounded in place or make reference to the Midwest.
